Happenings
Backyard music and art events to integrate the whole family.
It seems to me that a lot of the world's problems could be solved through the integration of diverse groups. For instance, if a conservative and a progressive got to know each other very well, they'd learn to see each other's point of view and, eventually, reach a common understanding about a given topic. So, one way to get diverse people together is through free entertainment.
Working with local artists, musicians, and families, Happenings were a way for people to get together and have a good time for free. These events were thrown in backyards, frontyards, and living rooms in various neighborhoods in Los Angeles and Chicago. Large paintings were hung as the backdrop for all girl punk bands or solo acoustic acts or, even, 8th graders to practice the works of Bach on a violin in front of friends, family, and strangers.
